Let me start by saying I'm using this on a E350 Mercedes-Benz and not a 5 series BMW. With that said it fits very well and definitely provides protection. I got it because the trees drop sap and the neighborhood cats like to sit on the roof of the car and scratch the hood getting up there. I also didn't want to deal with a full size car cover. I can't say how long it will last, but at this cost I'd be fine buying one every year or so to save my paint.
